Amy Pappas Loli Brings Greek Roots to Life at Café Amalia in Kirkwood
From Hygiene to Hospitality
For 25 years, Amy worked as a dental hygienist—a career she deeply cherished. But when the pandemic shuttered her office, she turned to what brought her solace: baking bread, blending vibrant Mediterranean dishes, and sharing them with friends and family. Soon enough, she discovered her comforting meals were attracting paying clients, sparking a successful private-catering venture.
Encouraged by her community and motivated by creative freedom, she decided to pivot careers. A prime location emerged on Manchester Road in Kirkwood, and Amy took the leap—transforming her cherished home-style cuisine into a welcoming public space.

Cultural Roots & Culinary Identity
Born and raised in south St. Louis as a first-generation Greek American, Amy credits her grandmother from Epirus, Greece, for her culinary foundation. Those early Saturdays spent baking bread and preparing pita with fresh herbs in her grandmother’s garden instilled a love for seasonal, authentic ingredients.
Today, she continues that legacy: importing handpicked oregano, Greek honey, feta from Epirus, and “liquid gold” olive oil. At Café Amalia, guests can expect traditional Greek fare—such as a carefully crafted chicken gyro—but also broader Mediterranean offerings inspired by her experiences with a Jordanian family she once babysat for.
“When you cook within the season and use fresh ingredients and quality food, it shows on the plate.”

A Philosophy of Togetherness
True Mediterranean hospitality isn’t simply about food—it’s about communion. Amy envisions Café Amalia as a vibrant gathering place reminiscent of her own childhood: tables brimming with fresh dishes, lively conversation, and that unmistakable sense of belonging.
Named in honor of her grandmother (“Amalia” being both their name and legacy), the café’s goal is to feel like Amy has personally invited you into her home—pouring coffee, dishing out traditional recipes with a modern twist, and inviting you into spirited conversation.
